Top 5 Final Fantasy Main Characters

The Final Fantasy series has told some wonderful stories, but they would not be as memorable without interesting main characters. From overcoming personal adversity, to saving the world, these are my Top 5 main characters from the Final Fantasy Series:

1. -Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII)-

Cloud is instantly recognised for his trademark spiky blonde hair, blue “Mako” eyes and gigantic Buster Sword. Although his character is most remembered for his journey to remember his past, find his true identity and seek revenge against Sephiroth for personal reasons. Cloud’s personality develops throughout Final Fantasy VII from his fake persona of a cold, cocky mercenary to a flawed, but optimistic leader that although doubting himself discovers the true courage to become a hero.

Memorable Quote: “I know… No one lives in the slums because they want to. It’s like this train. It can’t run anywhere except where its rails take it.”

2. -Ramza Beoulve (Final Fantasy Tactics)-

Born into the noble family of Beoulve, as a young man Ramza’s only wish was to become a famous knight and uphold his family’s name. Although after witnessing the death of his best friend’s sister because she was of common blood, Ramza sets out on a journey to fight against the injustices forced upon people despite their class or birth. Ramza is the most heroic character in the series as his actions are never rewarded or congratulated, yet he fights for what is right and to protect others regardless of the dangers to himself.

Memorable Quote: “Names don’t matter. What’s important is how you live your life.”

3. -Cecil Harvey (Final Fantasy IV)-

Cecil begins Final Fantasy IV as a dark knight and Captain of the Red Wings loyally serving the kingdom of Baron. He soon begins to question his king’s orders after he is tasked with attacking innocent people in order to gain power. From then on, Cecil undertakes a journey to overcome his dark past and become a holy Paladin. Cecil’s personal growth, unwavering spirit and strong beliefs make him a memorable lead character.

Memorable Quote: “I’m a coward… A coward who cannot even defy orders he knows he ought not follow…”

4. -Zidane Tribal (Final Fantasy IX)-

Coming after a few reserved and serious protagonists in earlier games, Zidane was a breath of fresh air to the series. Working as a thief, Zidane is friendly, laid-back, cheerful and flirtatious. Upon first trying to kidnap the princess Garnet, he ends up saving her and getting swept up in the war between various nations. As he is always looking to help people, Zidane gives lots of advice to his party members and always tries to do what’s right.

Memorable Quote: “The sly eagle doesn’t kill at whim.”

5. -Terra Branford (Final Fantasy VI)-

Terra is half human, half Esper allowing her the rare ability to cast magic. She is enslaved and used by the Empire against her will until she escapes and is saved by Locke and The Returners. Terra starts the game as a confused and shy young woman. As she develops during the game she becomes more assertive and discovers her will to fight. While Terra constantly doubts herself and questions her origins, she relies on the strength of her friends to press forward for the good of others.

Memorable Quote: “It’s not the net worth of one’s life that’s important. It is the day to day concerns, the personal victories, and the celebration of life… and love!”

  1. I only know about Cloud. This was an interesting post. It makes me want to play those other games. I definitely thought Cloud was a good character. I felt I could really relate to him better than I can with many other characters. His flaws are what makes him seem like a real person, despite him being fictional. I like how he’s a hero, kills Sephiroth and everything, but he gets motion sickness.

    • Completely agree with you, my favourite parts in Final Fantasy VII were the unexpected ones, it made everything more relatable. After Aeris death Cloud thought about giving up, something anyone would think about. Cloud never wanted to be the leader, but he did his best. Where most games would have their heroes say something inspirational, the best Cloud could come up with was “Let’s mosey”. I really hope you get to play some of the other games on this list and connect with their main characters too. Thanks

  2. WhiteKnight597

It’s awesome that Ramza’s on there! He has got to be the most underrated hero in FF history, maybe RPG history. I actually like the fact that he’s not an overpowering main character like most of them are (hell, his best class is a Squire). Not a main character, or even a protagonist, but I really enjoyed Delita as well.

    • I’m glad someone else acknowledges how brilliant Ramza was! The relationship/ rivalry between Ramza and Delita was a masterstroke by Matsuno and I think one of the best ever written in a video game. Thanks!
